Question 1

What is com tam in simple terms?

Accepted Answer

Com tam is a Vietnamese rice dish made with broken rice grains. Those grains were once sold cheaply because they cracked during milling. Today the rice is served with grilled pork, a fried egg, pickles, and a sweet and sour fish sauce called nuoc cham.

Question 2

What does com tam mean?

Accepted Answer

Com tam translates to "broken rice." The name refers to the fractured grains that give the dish its shorter, slightly chewy texture.

Question 3

What is the difference between com tam and regular rice?

Accepted Answer

Broken rice grains are shorter and thicker than whole grains. They become tender with a slight chew, and they hold toppings and sauce differently than long-grain rice does.

Question 4

What is com tam suon bi cha?

Accepted Answer

It is the classic full plate. Suon means grilled pork chop, bi means shredded pork skin mixed with toasted rice powder, and cha means steamed egg meatloaf. Most versions also include a fried egg and pickled vegetables.

Question 5

Is com tam a breakfast or lunch dish?

Accepted Answer

In Vietnam and in Vietnamese American communities, com tam is often eaten for breakfast or lunch. Many small shops sell out by early afternoon, so going earlier in the day is a good idea.

Question 6

How do I find com tam near me?

Accepted Answer

Search for com tam, broken rice, or Vietnamese rice plate in Google Maps. Use the filters for open now, takeout, or delivery, then read recent reviews that mention specific dishes.

Question 7

Is com tam healthy?

Accepted Answer

It can be a balanced meal, with protein from the pork and egg and vegetables from the pickles and cucumber. The fried egg, fatty pork skin, and sugar in the marinade add calories, so portion size and sauce amounts matter.

Question 8

Is com tam gluten free?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Marinades and some sauces may contain wheat or soy. Ask the restaurant about ingredients if you need to avoid gluten.

Question 9

Does com tam contain fish?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in most cases. Nuoc cham is made with fish sauce, and many marinades also use it. Ask about fish sauce if you have an allergy.
